Kashgar Old City (喀什老城)

Kashgar's Old City (老城, Lǎochéng) is one of the best-preserved Islamic quarters in Central Asia. The maze-like streets, earthen houses, and bazaars have changed little in centuries. Unlike other "old towns" in China, this is a living neighborhood where Uyghur families still live, work, and raise children.

What to See

Id Kah Mosque (艾提尕尔清真寺) — The largest mosque in China, built in 1442. The square in front is the social heart of the city — locals gather here in the evenings.

Handicraft Streets — The old city has streets dedicated to specific crafts: pottery, copper work, carpet weaving, and Uyghur medicine. Watch artisans at work.

Tea Houses — Uyghur tea houses serve milk tea, green tea, and Uyghur snacks. Some have live music in the evenings. Sit on the raised platform, cross your legs, and watch the world go by.

City Wall — Climb the old city wall for panoramic views of the Old City and the surrounding mountains. Best at sunset.

Residential Alleys — The narrow alleys between houses are the real Old City. Children play, women chat, and old men sit on doorsteps. Ask before photographing.
