Id Kah Mosque (艾提尕尔清真寺)

Id Kah Mosque (艾提尕尔清真寺, Àitígā'ěr Qīngzhēnsì) is the largest mosque in China and the spiritual heart of Kashgar. Built in 1442, it sits at the west end of the Old City's main square, where locals gather every evening.

What to See

The Courtyard — A large open courtyard surrounded by poplar trees can hold 20,000 worshippers. The courtyard is most atmospheric during the evening call to prayer.

The Prayer Hall — A beautiful hall with carved wooden columns and painted ceilings. Non-Muslims can enter outside prayer times.

The Square — The square in front of the mosque is the social center of the city. Locals gather here in the evenings to chat, play cards, and watch the sunset.

• Entry fee: ¥45 ($6)
• Closed to non-Muslims during the five daily prayer times
• The mosque is most atmospheric during evening prayer (around sunset)
• Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees
• Photography is allowed in the courtyard but not inside the prayer hall
