Gaotai Folk Residence (高台民居)

Gaotai Folk Residence (高台民居, Gāotái Mínjū) is the most photogenic spot in Kashgar — ancient earthen houses clinging to a 20-meter cliff above the Old City. The neighborhood has been continuously inhabited for 600 years, and some buildings lean against each other for support.

What to See

The Cliff Houses — The houses are built on a natural cliff, with each generation adding rooms and floors. Some buildings lean at dangerous angles, supported by wooden props.

Artisan Workshops — The neighborhood is home to traditional craftsmen: potters, copper workers, and carpet weavers. Watch them at work in their open workshops.

Narrow Alleys — The alleys between houses are atmospheric and photogenic. Children play, old men sit on doorsteps, and laundry hangs between buildings.

The View — From the road below the cliff, you can see the entire Gaotai neighborhood against the backdrop of the Old City. The best views are at sunset.
