Apak Khoja Mausoleum (阿帕克霍加墓)

The Apak Khoja Mausoleum (阿帕克霍加墓, Āpàk Huòjiā Mù) is Kashgar's holiest Islamic site — a Sufi shrine that has drawn pilgrims for 400 years. The complex includes a stunning mosque, a burial chamber, and a courtyard surrounded by glazed tilework.

What to See

The Mausoleum — The main building houses the tomb of Apak Khoja, a Sufi saint who founded a religious order in the 17th century. The interior is covered in intricate Islamic geometric patterns.

The Tilework — The exterior is decorated with blue and white glazed tiles in traditional Central Asian patterns. The tilework is some of the finest in Xinjiang.

The Courtyard — A peaceful courtyard surrounded by poplar trees and smaller tombs. The Apak Khoja family is buried here — over 70 tombs in total.

The Mosque — A small but beautiful mosque attached to the mausoleum. The wooden columns and painted ceiling are worth admiring.

• The mausoleum is about 5km from the Old City — take a taxi (¥10-15)
• Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees
• Photography is allowed in the courtyard but not inside the mausoleum
• The site is small but significant — allow at least an hour
