Hefei Travel Guide: Anhui's Capital & Gateway to Huangshan

Hefei (合肥) is the capital of Anhui Province and one of China's fastest-growing cities. While not a top tourist destination on its own, it serves as the perfect gateway to Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and offers a pleasant mix of parks, museums, and local culture.

The city has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years, and was home to several notable figures including Li Hongzhang, one of the most influential politicians of the late Qing Dynasty.

Why Hefei?

Gateway to Huangshan. Hefei is the main transit hub for reaching Huangshan, one of China's most iconic mountains. High-speed rail connects the two in 1.5 hours.

Local culture. Anhui cuisine (徽菜) is one of China's Eight Great Cuisines, known for its use of wild herbs and slow-cooking techniques. Hefei is the best place to sample it.

Affordable. Compared to larger cities, Hefei offers excellent value — good hotels, great food, and free attractions at budget-friendly prices.

By high-speed rail:

• From Shanghai: 2 hours, ¥200 ($28)
• From Nanjing: 1 hour, ¥100 ($14)
• From Hangzhou: 2.5 hours, ¥250 ($35)

By air: Hefei Xinqiao International Airport (HFE) with domestic flights.

Best Areas to Stay

Luyang District (庐阳区) — City center, walking distance to most attractions. Good range of hotels.

Shushan District (蜀山区) — Near universities and technology parks. More modern area.

Must-See Attractions

Bao Park (包公园)

A scenic park dedicated to Bao Zheng (包拯), the famous Song Dynasty judge known as "Justice Bao." The park includes his tomb, memorial hall, and a beautiful lake. Free entry.

Li Hongzhang Residence (李鸿章故居)

The former home of Li Hongzhang (1823-1901), one of the most powerful politicians of the late Qing Dynasty. A well-preserved traditional Chinese mansion. ¥20 ($2.80).

Chaohu Lake (巢湖)

One of China's five largest freshwater lakes, located 30 minutes from Hefei city center. Popular for boating, fishing, and lakeside dining.

Anhui Museum (安徽博物馆)

Excellent museum covering Anhui's history, with particularly fine collections of Huizhou-style architecture models and ancient bronzes. Free entry.

Practical Tips

• Best time: April-May or September-October. Summers are hot; winters are cold and damp.
• Transport: Metro covers main attractions. High-speed rail to Huangshan is frequent.
• Food budget: ¥30-60 ($4-8) per meal at local restaurants.
