Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺, Língyǐn Sì), meaning "Temple of the Soul's Retreat," is one of the largest Buddhist temples in China. Founded in 328 AD, it sits in a forested valley surrounded by grottoes carved into limestone cliffs.
What to See
Feilai Feng Grottoes (飞来峰) — Hundreds of Buddhist stone carvings dating back to the Song Dynasty. The grottoes are carved into a limestone cliff opposite the main temple.
Main Prayer Hall — A vast hall with a golden statue of Buddha surrounded by 24 guardian statues. The ceiling is covered in intricate carved woodwork.
Inscription Hall — Houses 47 stone tablets with inscriptions by Chinese emperors. The calligraphy is exquisite.
Forest Trail — A peaceful walk through ancient trees leading to the temple. The forest is especially atmospheric in the early morning.
