Yongqingfang 永庆坊 is Liwan's flagship restoration: a block of qilou 骑楼 — the arcaded shophouse style that defines old Guangzhou — rebuilt with genuine craft rather than flattened and faked. It's commercialised, yes, but it's the rare Chinese old-quarter project where the restoration itself is worth looking at: intact brickwork, rebuilt wooden shutters, and lanes scaled for walking rather than tour buses.

Inside the lanes you'll find the Bruce Lee ancestral home 李小龙祖居 (his father's family home; small, free, and better than it sounds), the Cantonese Opera Art Museum 粤剧艺术博物馆 (free with passport, and one of the city's best-kept secrets — a garden complex built around opera history), indie bookshops, letterpress studios, and a dense run of cafés and dessert shops.

Honest take: this is Guangzhou's version of a curated heritage district. It won't feel "undiscovered," but it delivers what most fake-old-towns don't — real architectural fabric and living craft. Pair it with the surrounding Liwan streets, where the un-restored qilou blocks carry on for kilometres.

Getting there: Metro Line 1 to Changshou Road 长寿路站, then 10 minutes on foot through the lanes off Enning Road 恩宁路.

Practical tips

  • Free to wander; the Cantonese Opera Art Museum inside is also free with passport.
  • Go late afternoon into evening — lanterns come on and the lanes get their atmosphere.
  • Combine with Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and the Liwan qilou blocks next door.
  • Metro: Changshou Road station (Line 1), then a 10-minute walk through the old lanes.
  • Weekend afternoons get crowded with local day-trippers; weekday mornings are calm.
