Pearl River Night Cruise: Guangzhou After Dark

The Pearl River 珠江 (Zhūjiāng) is Guangzhou's main street after dark, and a one-hour cruise is the cheapest way to see the city whole: 19th-century waterfront facades near the old port, the lit bridges, and finally the 600-metre Canton Tower 广州塔 pulsing through its nightly colour cycle.

Boats leave from Dashatou Wharf 大沙头码头 (the bigger operation, more departures) and Tianzi Wharf 天字码头 (smaller, more central, near Beijing Road) roughly every 30–40 minutes between 19:00 and 22:00. Standard one-hour tickets run ¥68–128 ($9–18) depending on boat and deck class; dinner cruises cost ¥200–380 ($28–53).

Honest take: take the standard boat. Dinner versions serve mediocre banquet food while you're corralled indoors — the whole point is the open deck, the river wind, and the skyline drifting past. If it's a humid summer night, that deck is also the coolest place in the city.

Getting there: Dashatou Wharf is a short walk from Donghuqu metro; Tianzi Wharf sits on Yanjiang Road near Haizhu Square (Metro Lines 2/6). The riverside promenade on the north bank is free and nearly as good if you'd rather skip the boat entirely — and the hourly tower light show at 20:00 is better appreciated from outside.
