Dian Dou De 点都德 is the modern dim sum chain that Guangzhou locals actually trust — consistent quality, honest ¥16–30 ($2.20–4.20) basket prices, and none of the tourist markup you'll find at the famous garden restaurants. For most travellers it's the best first yum cha 饮茶 ("drink tea," what locals call the meal) in the city.
The format: take a queue ticket at the door, get seated, tick orders on a paper sheet or scan a QR, and tea arrives first — pu'er or chrysanthemum are the safe choices. Must-order dishes: 金牌虾饺 (gold-medal shrimp dumplings, the signature), 陈皮牛肉球 (beef balls with tangerine peel), 红米肠 (red rice noodle rolls with shrimp), and 荷叶饭 (lotus-leaf rice) to finish. Expect ¥40–70 ($5.50–10) per person.
Dim sum here is served all day, but locals eat between 07:30 and 11:00 — and the morning version is the real one: newspaper-reading retirees, trolleys of fresh steamers, no queues before 08:00 on weekdays.
Honest take: it's a chain, so don't expect romance — expect a clean, loud, efficient introduction to the meal that defines Guangzhou. Branches on Tianhe Road, Shangxiajiu and elsewhere all deliver the same standard.
Getting there: Metro Line 1 to Changshou Road (Shangxiajiu branch) or Line 1/3 to Tiyu Xilu (Tianhe branch).
Practical tips

- Order: 金牌虾饺 shrimp dumplings, 陈皮牛肉球 beef balls with tangerine peel, 荷叶饭 lotus-leaf rice.
- Go 07:30-09:00 to eat like a local; retirees with newspapers are your quality benchmark.
