Canton Tower: Up Guangzhou's 600-Metre Landmark

Canton Tower 广州塔 (Guǎngzhōu Tǎ) is the city's signature silhouette — a 600-metre twisted lattice of steel that lights up in hourly colour cycles after dark. At completion it was the world's tallest tower, and it still anchors every Guangzhou skyline photo.

The paid experience is an observation-deck stack: the standard 108th-floor deck costs ¥150 ($21); the open-air 488-metre Sky Deck near the top runs ¥228–288 ($32–40); and the Bubble Tram — a ring of glass ferris capsules circling the tower's waist — adds ¥131–200 ($18–28). Opening hours are 09:30–22:30 with last entry at 22:00.

Honest take: the tower's best view is of the tower. Ride it once if observation decks are your thing, but the genuinely memorable version is free — stand on the north bank at Haixinsha 海心沙 or along Yanjiang Road at 20:00 for the light show, with the whole Zhujiang New Town skyline reflected in the river. From up top, the city's haze often flattens the view; from across the water, it glows.

Getting there: Metro Line 3 or the APM Line to Canton Tower station, at the tower's base. Combine with the APM Line's short driverless ride from Linhexi if you're coming from Tianhe.
