Huayan Temple (华严寺) is a Liao-Jin dynasty Buddhist temple complex dating to the 11th century. It contains some of the finest wooden architecture from the Liao and Jin dynasties.
The Sutra Repository Hall (薄伽教藏殿) is the oldest building with extraordinary wooden carvings and Liao dynasty statues. The Mahavira Hall (大雄宝殿) is the largest hall with golden Buddhist statues and painted ceilings.
Walkable from the city center. ¥50 ($7).
Practical tips
- The Sutra Repository Hall has the finest wooden carvings. Visit in the morning for the best light.
