The Hanging Temple (悬空寺) is one of China's most astonishing architectural achievements - a Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian temple built into a cliff face 75 meters above the ground. Built in 491 AD, it has survived earthquakes, floods, and wars for over 1,500 years.
The temple is supported by wooden poles inserted into the cliff and beams embedded in the rock. The upper section is cantilevered, using the cliff's natural overhang for support. Narrow wooden walkways connect the different prayer halls and libraries.
65 km south of Datong (1 hour by bus). ¥125 ($17.50) includes nearby scenic area.
Practical tips
- The walk up is narrow and steep. The view from inside looking down is breathtaking.
