Sixty kilometers south of Dali, Weishan Ancient Town (巍山古城) is what happens when nobody bothers to commercialize an old town. Once a prosperous stop on the Tea Horse Road (茶马古道), it simply faded into quiet county life after the trade routes moved on. The result: Ming and Qing dynasty architecture with actual people living in it, not selling panda hats from it.
Start at the northern end. Gongchen Tower (拱辰楼) is the town's massive Ming gate — climb the stairs for ¥5-10 ($1-1.50) and you'll get a rooftop view over the old roofs and a sense of why Weishan earned National Historic and Cultural City status. Walk south down Nanxun Street (南熏街), the main artery lined with courtyard homes and wooden shopfronts, to Xinggong Tower (星拱楼) at the far end.
Between the gates, the real draw is the pace. Stop at a family-run noodle shop for yī gēn miàn (一根面) — a single unbroken strand of hand-pulled noodle, local to Weishan, usually served in a rich broth with Yunnan ham and pickled vegetables. Count on ¥12-15 ($1.50-2) per bowl.
If you have a full day, add Weibaoshan (巍宝山), a Taoist mountain 10 km outside town with two dozen temples scattered across forested slopes. But half a day is enough for the town itself — rare for a Chinese attraction that's actually worth the journey.
Practical tips
- From Dali Old Town, take a bus from Dali Southwest Bus Station (大理客运站西南站) to Weishan county — roughly ¥25 ($3.50), 1.5 hours. Taxi costs ¥150-180 ($21-25) each way. The last return bus departs around 5:30 PM — confirm the schedule on arrival and don't miss it. Bring cash; small-town vendors may not accept foreign-card-linked mobile payments.
