Jizu Mountain (鸡足山)

Jizu Mountain (鸡足山 Jīzú Shān, "Chicken Foot Mountain"), 1.5 hours by road from Dali, is one of China's most revered Buddhist peaks — ranking alongside Emei, Wutai, Putuo, and Jiuhua. Its name comes from the mountain's distinctive chicken-foot shape, with three ridges fanning forward and one trailing behind.

The summit, Tianzhu Peak (3,248m), is crowned by Jinding Temple (Golden Summit) and the 42-meter, 13-story Lengyan Pagoda. On clear days the views stretch across the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Just below the summit, the natural stone arch of Huashou Gate (华首门) is a pilgrimage highlight — locals press their ears to the rock, believing they can hear faint Buddhist chanting from within.

The mountain holds over 30 temples, with Zhusheng Temple — the largest — and the serene Fangguang Temple, which serves excellent vegetarian lunch (donation-based, reserve ahead). Wild Tibetan macaques roam the forested trails; they're entertaining but aggressive if they spot food.

From Dali Ancient Town, a direct shuttle bus departs at 8:30 AM (¥85 / $12 round trip). Most visitors ride the cable car up from Zhusheng Temple, explore the summit and Huashou Gate, then hike down — or take the cable car both ways if short on time.
