Liziba (李子坝站, Lǐzǐbà Zhàn) on monorail Line 2 is Chongqing's signature photo stunt: a train that punches straight through floors 6-8 of a 19-story apartment and retail block at 39 Liziba Zhengjie (李子坝正街39号). The building and station opened together in 2004 — China's first residential building co-built with a rail line — and today the concourse carries more camera phones than commuters.
The viewing platform (观景平台, guānjǐng píngtái), opened across the street in 2018, is a free deck built for exactly one photo: the train sliding into the tower past balconies with laundry hanging out. It runs 24 hours with no ticket and no booking — the only cost is your metro fare, ¥2-3 ($0.28-0.42) from Jiefangbei (解放碑), four stops and about 10 minutes up Line 2. Exit 2, then follow the signs downhill past the street-level shops.
Trains run every 3-8 minutes and the railing line moves fast. Golden hour (5-6 PM) lights the building's west face and flows straight into a Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) evening; early mornings (7-9 AM) are quieter but flat-lighted. Weekends and holidays the platform is shoulder-to-shoulder, so budget 30-45 minutes and a little patience. If you want the roller-coaster version, ride the riverside stretch of Line 2 toward Fotuguan (佛图关) from the front carriage instead of walking away.
Practical tips
- Free and open 24 hours, but the railing line is worst 10:00-17:00 and all day on weekends — come at 7-9 AM or 5-6 PM for golden light and fewer elbows.
- Take Line 2 from Jiefangbei (解放碑): four stops, about 10 minutes, ¥2-3 ($0.28-0.42). Ride the front carriage of any train for the through-the-building view from the inside.
- Exit the station via Exit 2 and follow the signs downhill across the street to the platform — this stretch of Chongqing confuses phone maps, so trust the signs and the crowd.
- Trains run every 3-8 minutes, so frame your shot and wait one or two for a clean pass — no need to chase every arrival.
- Pair it with Hongya Cave (洪崖洞) the same evening: golden hour at Liziba, then the neon after dark, roughly 15 minutes north by metro.
