Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻)

The Dazu Rock Carvings (大足石刻) are China's last great age of cliff sculpture — 141 sites carved from the late Tang through the Song dynasty (9th–13th centuries), and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. What sets Dazu apart from earlier Buddhist grottoes is its humanity: Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures mix with scenes of everyday Song-dynasty life — fishermen, farmers, a mother feeding a child — rendered with a warmth and psychological detail that feels startlingly modern.

Two sites matter. Baodingshan (宝顶山) is the headliner: a 31-meter reclining Buddha and the famous Thousand-Hand Guanyin (千手观音), a bodhisattva with 1,007 carved arms fanning out like a golden halo (behind a viewing window, recently restored). Beishan (北山) is older, quieter, and covers Tang-era niches in a tighter space.

The day trip takes discipline. From Chongqing city center the carvings sit about 100 km east. Fastest option is the high-speed rail (约40–60分钟) to Dazu South Station (大足南站), then a 40-minute taxi or bus to the site; a private transfer door-to-door runs roughly 1.5–2 hours and is worth it if you want both sites without taxi-hunting. Hongya Cave–adjacent concierges and tour desks sell day packages but at a premium.

Ticket-wise, the combo at ¥140 ($20) covers Baodingshan and Beishan and is the best value — single-site Baodingshan is ¥115 ($16). Buy online with your passport, go early to beat the tour buses, and hire an English guide at the entrance. Without one, the detailed shows carved into the cliffs read as beautiful rock; with one, they become medieval China's best storyboard.
