Shantou Xiaonan'ao Historic District (汕头小公园)

Xiaonan'ao (小公园, Xiǎogōngyuán) is the historic heart of Shantou — a district of 1920s arcade buildings (骑楼, qílóu) built by returning Teochew merchants from Southeast Asia. The architecture blends Chinese, Western, and Southeast Asian styles into something uniquely Chaoshan.

What to See

Arcade Building Maze — The district is a grid of narrow streets lined with restored arcade buildings. The buildings feature ornate facades, inner courtyards, and rooftop terraces. Walk randomly — the best discoveries are off the main paths.

Shantou Museum (汕头博物馆) — A small but well-curated museum covering Shantou's history as a treaty port. Free entry, closed Mondays.

Coffee Street (咖啡街) — A narrow lane lined with cafes in restored buildings. Good for a kung fu tea break.

Rooftop Bars — Several buildings have rooftop bars with views over the historic district. Best at sunset.
