Chaozhou's ancient town food street isn't a single street — it's the entire old city. Every alley, every corner, every shopfront has been perfecting Teochew dishes for generations. This is one of China's great food cities, and the ancient town is where you experience it.

Must-Try Dishes

Teochew Beef Balls (潮汕牛肉丸) — Bouncy, springy, made by hand-pounding beef with wooden mallets. A good vendor will bounce the balls off the table. ¥10-15 ($1.40-2) per bowl.

Oyster Omelette (蚝烙, háo luò) — Crispy outside, gooey inside, with plump local oysters. Different from Xiamen's version — more egg, less starch. ¥15-25 ($2-3.50).

Kung Fu Tea (功夫茶) — Not just a drink but a ritual. Every tea house performs the ceremony: warming cups, washing tea, pouring from height. A pot costs ¥10-20 ($1.40-3).

Sweet Soup (甜汤, tián tāng) — Teochew-style dessert soups with peanuts, taro, or red beans. ¥5-10 ($0.70-1.40).

Teochew Porridge (潮汕砂锅粥) — Congee with seafood or pork, cooked until rice grains are still whole. Perfect for breakfast. ¥15-30 ($2-4).

Where to Eat

West Gate Area (西门) — The densest concentration of food stalls. Start here.

Renmin Road (人民路) — More sit-down restaurants, including beef hotpot places.

Ancient Town Market (古城市场) — Morning market with fresh ingredients and breakfast stalls.

Practical Tips

  • Most stalls are cash or mobile payment only
  • Arrive hungry — portions are small by design so you can try more
  • Tea houses are for sitting and relaxing — don't rush the kung fu tea ceremony
  • The food scene peaks from 17:00-21:00

Practical tips

  • Start from the north gate and work south. Try everything — most dishes cost ¥5-15.
