Yuelu Academy (岳麓书院)

Yuelu Academy (岳麓书院, Yuèlù Shūyuàn) is one of China's four great ancient academies — a 1,000-year-old university that has been teaching Confucianism since the Song Dynasty.

What to See

The Library — The ancient library houses thousands of classical texts — the heart of the academy's scholarly tradition. The wooden shelves and reading rooms are atmospheric.

The Lecture Halls — Where scholars have debated Confucian philosophy for 1,000 years. The halls are simple and elegant, reflecting the academy's values.

The Gardens — Beautiful gardens with ancient trees, ponds, and pavilions. The gardens are a peaceful retreat from the city.

The Calligraphy — The academy has a collection of stone inscriptions with calligraphy by famous scholars. The writing is beautiful to look at even if you can't read it.
