Changchun World Sculpture Park (长春世界雕塑园)

Changchun World Sculpture Park (长春世界雕塑园) opened in 2003 on the city's main north-south boulevard and has since collected more than 400 works from over 200 countries, alongside a permanent collection of large-scale Chinese monumental sculpture. It is not a museum with a roof - it is a park with 400 pieces of art in it.

Highlights

The international collection. Stone, bronze, steel, ceramic and fiberglass works sent in by sculptors worldwide, most of them commissioned specifically for the park. The range is genuinely broad: there is African figurative work, European abstract, and a surprising amount of South and Southeast Asian carving.

The Chinese monumental section. Larger-than-life works in bronze and marble, several of them portraits of notable figures, on the park's central axis.

The annual symposium. Each autumn the park hosts an international sculpture symposium, and the new pieces get installed on the lawns. The collection is therefore never quite finished, which is part of the point.

The winter addition. From roughly December to February, sections of the park are draped in ice-and-light installations, a different kind of spectacle again.

Practical Notes

¥30 ($4.20) for the park. A combined ticket also covers the adjacent Japan-China Friendship Garden, and it is worth the small extra. Open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM seasonally, with reduced winter hours. Plan 1.5-2 hours.

Go in autumn. The trees put on a proper display around late September to mid-October, which is also when the new symposium works are being installed. Go in the morning if you want the lawns to yourself, or late afternoon in summer for better light on the stone. Cycling is not allowed inside, but you can walk the full circuit comfortably in a couple of hours.
