Tiananmen Square (天安门广场, Tiān'ānmén Guǎngchǎng) is 44 hectares of grey paving stone and it feels every bit that big. There is almost no shade, nowhere to sit, and the monuments — the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, Mao's Mausoleum — are spaced so far apart that crossing the square takes fifteen minutes at a normal walk. It is not a charming place. It is an overwhelming one, and that is the point.
Most travelers combine it with the Forbidden City, entering the square from the south near Qianmen (前门) and walking north under Tiananmen Gate itself. The practical catch is bureaucratic rather than physical: since the reservation system rolled out, you cannot simply stroll in. You book a free timed slot in advance with your passport number, then show that passport at a screening checkpoint. Travelers turn up daily without a booking and get turned away, then lose their Forbidden City slot too.
Go at either end of the day. Mid-afternoon in summer the heat radiating off the stone is brutal and the crowds bunch around the flagpole. Late afternoon light makes the Gate's red walls and yellow tiles genuinely photogenic, and by dusk the square empties enough to feel the scale properly.
Nearest metro: Tiananmen East (天安门东) or Tiananmen West (天安门西) on Line 1, and Qianmen (前门) on Line 2 for the southern entrance. Free public toilets sit at the square's southern corners; carry your own tissue.
Practical tips
- Reserve 1-7 days ahead via the official 'Tiananmen Area' WeChat mini-program using your passport number; slots for weekends and holidays vanish first.
- Bring the physical passport you booked with — no passport, no entry, no exceptions, and photocopies are refused.
- Security screening funnels through a handful of entrances; allow 20-30 minutes at the underpass checkpoints on Chang'an Avenue.
- The flag-raising ceremony happens at sunrise and lowering at sunset — the crowd builds an hour before, so arrive early or skip it.
- Photography of the square and monuments is fine; do not photograph or film police, soldiers or security equipment.
