Simatai Great Wall Night Tour and Gubei Water Town

Simatai (司马台, Sīmǎtái) is the only section of the Great Wall that lets you up after dark, and the experience is genuinely unlike any other wall visit. Floodlights pick out the ramparts running along the ridge, the valley below drops into blackness, and the cable car glides up through cold night air with the illuminated towers stacked above you. It is theatrical, slightly artificial, and unforgettable.

Understand what you are buying, though. This is a managed attraction, not a hike. You take a shuttle, then a cable car, then walk a restricted stretch between a handful of towers with railings and guides — the steep, dangerous upper towers stay closed at night. Purists will find it sanitised.

The wall comes packaged with Gubei Water Town (古北水镇, Gǔběi Shuǐzhèn) at its foot, a from-scratch reconstruction of a canal town: grey-tiled lanes, waterways, dye workshops, a hot spring hotel and lantern-lit bridges. It is unapologetically built for tourism and it is also very pretty at night, which is the honest summary of the whole trip.

At roughly 140km from central Beijing, this eats an entire evening and most of the next morning's energy. The combo ticket around ¥280 ($39) covering the town, night wall and return cable car is the standard purchase. Do not attempt it as a same-day add-on to another sight — treat it as its own day, ideally with a night in the town.
