Everyone debates which section of the Great Wall to visit. Here's the honest answer for most travelers: Mutianyu. It's restored enough to be safe and photogenic, but gets a fraction of the crowds that swarm Badaling. You can actually stand on the wall, take a photo, and not have 47 strangers in the frame.

Getting there takes about 90 minutes from central Beijing, which naturally filters out the large tour groups that stick to Badaling (only 60 minutes away). The simplest option is the Mubus shuttle, which departs from near Dongzhimen and costs around ¥80 round trip — it drops you at the entrance and picks you up on a fixed schedule. Alternatively, the public bus route (916 Express to Huairou, then a taxi) is cheaper but requires more navigation.

Once you arrive, the cable car (¥120 round trip) whisks you to watchtower 14, which is a good starting point. From here, you can walk in either direction. Head east toward watchtower 23 for the most photogenic stretch — the wall snakes across forested ridges with dramatic elevation changes. Head west toward watchtower 6 for a shorter, easier walk.

The toboggan ride down (¥100) is genuinely fun — a stainless-steel slide that winds down the mountainside. It's touristy, but so is everything at the Great Wall, and this one delivers. Kids love it. Adults pretend they don't love it and then go again.

The best time to visit is early morning on a weekday. Arrive by 8 AM and you'll have long stretches of wall nearly to yourself. By noon, even Mutianyu gets busy with domestic tour groups. The light is also better in the morning for photos, with the sun illuminating the wall from the east.

Wear decent shoes. The restored sections are well-maintained, but the steps are uneven and some inclines are steep. This isn't a stroll — parts of it will make your quads burn.

Practical tips

  • Take the 916 Express bus from Dongzhimen Transit Hub to Huairou, then a local taxi (about ¥40-50) to Mutianyu. Or book a Mubus shuttle (¥80 round trip) from downtown. Weekdays have a fraction of the weekend crowds.
