Jingshan Park: The Best View of the Forbidden City

Jingshan Park (景山公园, Jǐngshān Gōngyuán) is an artificial hill built from the earth dug out of the Forbidden City's moat, and it exists more or less to give you the view you came to Beijing for. From the Wanchun Pavilion at the top, the entire palace complex unfolds below in a perfect north-south line: rank after rank of golden roofs, the courtyards you just walked through suddenly legible as a single plan, and behind them the towers of modern Beijing pressing in on the horizon.
At ¥2 it is the best value in the city. The climb is short but genuinely steep, and the stone steps are worn slick in places — bad news for weak knees, though there are benches and terraces to break the ascent.
Beyond the viewpoint, the park is a working neighbourhood space rather than a monument. Retirees play cards and Chinese chess under the pines on the eastern slope, choirs belt out revolutionary songs near the north gate in the morning, and the peony gardens are a genuine spectacle in late April. Most tourists climb, shoot and leave within 30 minutes, which means the lower paths stay quiet even on busy days.
Enter via the south gate (opposite the Forbidden City's Gate of Divine Prowess, 神武门) or the east gate. Nearest metro is Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷) on Lines 6 and 8, about a 15-minute walk, or take bus 5, 58 or 111 to Jingshan Xijie. There is no need to book, and tickets are sold at the gate all day.
Practical tips
- Do this immediately after exiting the Forbidden City's north gate — the park entrance is directly across Jingshan Front Street.
- Entry is ¥2 cash or Alipay/WeChat; the ¥2 supplement for the hilltop Wanchun Pavilion interior is optional and skippable.
- The climb is about 45m of uneven stone steps with handrails — 10-15 minutes at a slow pace, no lift alternative.
- Late afternoon backlights the Forbidden City nicely; for front-lit rooftops come mid-morning instead.
- The summit platform is small and gets a scrum at sunset — arrive 40 minutes before to claim a railing spot.
