The Forbidden City (故宫)

The Forbidden City doesn't do subtle. Nearly 1,000 buildings spread across 72 hectares, painted in imperial yellow and vermillion, housing a million artifacts from five centuries of Chinese emperors. It's overwhelming, exhausting, and absolutely worth the effort.

Here's what most guidebooks understate: the difference between visiting at 8:30 AM and 10 AM is enormous. The first two hours after opening give you the Hall of Supreme Harmony with maybe a few hundred visitors instead of a few thousand. That's the single biggest factor in whether you enjoy this place or feel like you're navigating a theme park queue.

The route is one-way, south to north, so plan accordingly. Enter at the Meridian Gate (午门), and you'll flow through the outer courts — the massive ceremonial halls where emperors conducted state business — before reaching the inner courts where they actually lived. The outer courts are impressive for sheer scale. The inner courts are where things get interesting: personal quarters, palace intrigue, the occasional murder plot.

Don't skip the side halls. Most visitors barrel through the central axis and miss the best parts. The Clock Gallery (钟表馆) houses a bizarre, wonderful collection of European automata given as diplomatic gifts. The Treasure Gallery (珍宝馆) has jade carvings, gold filigree, and the kind of excess that made dynasties collapse.

The Palace Museum's official website (gugong.cn) is the only place to buy tickets. Third-party scalpers charge 2-3x the price. Tickets are date-specific, non-transferable, and require your passport number. Book as soon as your travel dates are firm — peak season slots vanish within hours.

After exiting the north gate, cross the street to Jingshan Park and climb the hill directly opposite. The panoramic view of the Forbidden City's golden rooftops is the single best photo opportunity in Beijing, and it costs ¥2.
