Badaling Great Wall: The Classic Section by S2 Train

Badaling (八达岭, Bādálǐng) is the Great Wall of postcards and state visits: fully restored, wide crenellated ramparts, handrails, cable cars, guardrails, a museum, and a car park the size of a small airport. Purists sneer at it, and they have a point — this is the least atmospheric wall experience within reach of Beijing, and in peak season the crowd density on the ramp between towers is genuinely comparable to a rush-hour metro carriage.

But it earns its place for two specific groups. If you are travelling with small children, elderly relatives or anyone with limited stamina, Badaling's paved surfaces, cable cars, food outlets and toilets make the wall reachable in a way that Mutianyu's stairs or Jinshanling's rubble do not. And if you only have half a day, the S2 train from Huangtudian gets you there and back faster and cheaper than any other section — ¥6 each way, roughly 80 minutes, with a scenic run through the Guangou valley.

The scenery itself is legitimately spectacular: the wall snakes over multiple ridgelines here and the restored towers photograph beautifully, particularly from the higher north section. In winter or on a weekday in November it can even be quiet.

Practical shape of the day: leave central Beijing by 07:00, allow 90-120 minutes on the wall, and be back by early afternoon. Skip the aggressive souvenir strip at the base, and eat before you go — food at the site is overpriced and mediocre.
